St.George, Bank of Melbourne and BankSA all share the same rewards program: Amplify Rewards. It’s a flexible points program with the ability to transfer your Amplify Points across to several partner programs. These include Velocity Frequent Flyer, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer and the Everyday Rewards program of Woolworths supermarkets.
Having said that, Amplify Rewards doesn’t allow for points transfers to Qantas Frequent Flyer. Those keen to earn Qantas Points would need to select the ‘Amplify Qantas’ loyalty option when taking out a rewards-earning credit card with the banks above. This locks you in to earning Qantas Points, with an automatic points transfer from the bank to Qantas Frequent Flyer every month.
This beginner’s guide provides a broad overview of the Amplify Rewards credit card range. We also look at the program’s transfer options, ways to maximise rewards, and what to know about upcoming tweaks to the earning rates on everyday spend.
The Amplify Rewards Cards Range
There are now two tiers of credit cards across the Amplify Rewards range. The Amplify Signature Visa offers the highest points earning on spend. The Card includes a host of travel perks, such as lounge access. The Amplify Rewards Platinum Visa is a lower-fee card, which is reflected by its earning rate. This is now the entry-level product, after the standard ‘Amplify Rewards Visa’ was withdrawn from sale for new customers.

Amplify Rewards vs. Qantas
When it comes to choosing the loyalty option on an Amplify card, there are two popular picks. There’s Amplify Rewards, which allows for the earning of flexible points, as outlined above. There’s also Amplify Qantas, which forgoes any participation in Amplify Rewards, in favour of the direct earning of Qantas Points.
While it’s possible to change options after already holding the card, the points earned aren’t interchangeable between programs. This means you can’t notch up a big balance of Amplify Rewards points, opt-in to Qantas, and then see all of those rewards become Qantas Points. Ditto, if moving from Amplify Qantas to Amplify Rewards, given the way that points are deposited into Qantas Frequent Flyer automatically every month.
Amplify Rewards conversion rates
We’ve already crunched the numbers for you above, in terms of the ‘effective earn rate’. But for those who love detail and want to cross-check things for themselves, here are the direct conversion rates from Amplify Rewards. Note, the conversion rates are the same regardless of whether a card is with St.George, Bank of Melbourne or BankSA.
- 2 Amplify Points to 1 point in Velocity Frequent Flyer
- 3 Amplify Points to 1 mile in Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
- 3 Amplify Points to 2 points in Everyday Rewards
Velocity Points are useful in securing reward seats on Virgin Australia flights. Subject to availability, they can also be used to book reward flights with a range of international partners. These currently include Qatar Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Hong Kong Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Beijing Capital Airlines, South African Airways and more. They can also be used to book Singapore Airlines flights, but rates, carrier charges and availability may differ from what’s bookable through KrisFlyer, so it pays to check both options.
KrisFlyer, on the other hand, is arguably the best program for booking Singapore Airlines flights. It’s also worth noting that Velocity can book Economy, Premium Economy and Business Class on Singapore Airlines. But for First Class or Suites, you’ll need to use KrisFlyer. These premium cabins are available on selected flights and aircraft from Sydney and Melbourne to Singapore, as well as a number of other key routes. KrisFlyer members can also redeem for flights right across the Star Alliance.

You should allow at least three business days for your Amplify Points to be converted to frequent flyer points.
Qantas Frequent Flyer
Prefer to earn Qantas Points? Then you might consider selecting the Amplify Qantas loyalty option for monthly direct earning of Qantas Points. This could be a good option for those who primarily fly with Qantas, Jetstar, oneworld, or Qantas’ other partner airlines, like Emirates.
The points junkies among us may have also noticed a trick with Amplify Rewards. This is, you can convert from Amplify from Everyday Rewards. In turn, Everyday Rewards has a direct partnership with Qantas – and Everyday Rewards points can become Qantas Points. But hold up! We’ve done the numbers, and it’s not the best value for Qantas Points. On a per-dollar-spent basis and from the same volume of spend, a greater number of Qantas Points would be received by opting for Altitude Qantas up front, rather than transferring through Everyday Rewards. (We like how you think, though!)

Choosing Amplify Rewards or Qantas for the sign-up bonus
Did you know that you could choose one program for the sign-on bonus, and then later switch to the other program once the bonus points have been credited? Given this, it begs the question, ‘Which program is best for the bonus points?’
As it happens, it’ll depend on how many points are on offer at the time, and how that differs between programs. If both offers were ‘100,000 points’, for instance, the Qantas offer would be more valuable. That’s because 100,000 Amplify Points would be only 50,000 Velocity Points, if converted to Velocity at the 2:1 rate. To have the same strength in number as an offer for 100,000 bonus Qantas Points, the Amplify Rewards bonus offer would need to be twice as high, for the customer to receive the equivalent of 100,000 Velocity Points.
You can make the switch online using this form (St.George version). A very important note for switching the other way around:
If you are switching from Amplify Rewards to Qantas, points earned under Amplify Rewards must be redeemed within 90 days of the program switch being processed or they will be forfeited.
However, switching from Qantas Points to Amplify Rewards won’t affect your previous balance.
Other redemption opportunities
You can also use your Amplify Rewards points on redemptions for purchases such as technology, appliances and other merchandise, as well as card fees, donations, gift cards and for travel through the Amplify portal. But, in general, we find the best value to be transferring points to frequent flyer programs. That’s because of the heightened value of the rewards being obtained, versus the number of points transferred.

Summing up
Amplify Rewards offers direct conversion to Velocity, KrisFlyer and Everyday Rewards. This could make the program’s affiliated credit cards worth considering as a method of earning frequent flyer points on Visa spend. The ability to swap over to direct Qantas Points earning without applying for a new credit card may also appeal. Just be mindful of the 90-day expiry window on your existing Amplify Rewards points, if you make that switch to Amplify Qantas.
