If you’re in the market for a new Visa credit card, it could be worth taking a look at ANZ Rewards Black. The bank is now tempting eligible new customers with an offer of up to 180,000 bonus ANZ Reward Points. That’s potentially worth up to 90,000 Velocity Points, when converted from ANZ Rewards.

ANZ’s bonus offer is delivered in two parts. In the first year, you could receive 130,000 bonus ANZ Reward Points, plus $100 back to your card, when you spend $5,000 on eligible purchases in the first three months. An annual fee of $375 applies.

Then in the second year, you could receive a further 50,000 bonus ANZ Reward Points, if keeping the card open for 15 months after activation (and paying the second year’s annual fee). Combined, that’s up to 180,000 bonus ANZ Reward Points on offer.

Here’s a look at where those points could take you, and how you could continue earning points on everyday spends.

How to spend up to 180,000 ANZ Reward Points

Let’s say you’re planning ahead for a holiday and wait to receive the full bounty of 180,000 ANZ Reward Points before you spend them. Here’s where that stash of points could take you, when earned via the ANZ Rewards Black credit card.

ANZ Rewards – the bank’s proprietary credit card points program – offers a 2:1 transfer rate to Velocity. If you had 180,000 ANZ Reward Points, that’s akin 90,000 Velocity Points. You could also transfer ANZ Reward Points to Cathay and KrisFlyer at a 3:1 rate (60,000 miles) – or to Air New Zealand Airpoints at a 200:$1 rate ($900 Airpoints Dollars).

Given the sharper transfer rate, Velocity may provide the best value. When points are used on Velocity’s best ‘tier one’ redemption flights on short domestic routes, those rewards could unlock 15 one-way Economy flights (7.5 return trips). That includes popular routes like Sydney to Melbourne.

Fancy a journey further afield? You could instead take a return trip from Sydney or Melbourne to Singapore, flying Premium Economy in one direction and Economy on the other. Or, use your points to fly Singapore Airlines Business Class, one-way.

Applicable taxes, fees and charges are payable on reward flights, in addition to the points redeemed.

Earning more points with ANZ Rewards Black

While bonus points offers can be rewarding, ANZ Rewards Black also provides points on eligible everyday spends. Here’s what you could earn on those eligible transactions.

  • Up to and including $5,000 per statement period: 2 Reward Points per $1 spent.
  • Transactions beyond $5,000 per statement period: 1 Reward Point per $1 spent, uncapped.

For cardholders spending less than $5,000 per month, that’s equivalent to earning one Velocity Point per dollar on everyday purchases. On the same basis, every $5,900 spent (where total spends don’t exceed $5,000 per single statement period) could be enough to land a reward flight on Virgin Australia. (As always, taxes, fees and charges apply upon redemption).

ANZ supports mobile wallet payments, including Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay. This means you could also earn rewards by paying for purchases using your smartphone or smartwatch, even if you’re not carrying your physical credit card. It’s also possible to add up to nine additional cardholders for a fee of $65 per card. Then, everybody’s spends can contribute to the primary cardholder’s points tally.
