Why Choose This Card
The MyCard Rewards Card is one of those cards that makes a lot of sense if you’re getting started with points, or if you want flexibility without committing to a high annual fee.
At $199 per year, it sits firmly in the “entry to mid-tier” category, but the 100,000 bonus MyCard Reward Points⁷ do a lot of heavy lifting in year one. You can transfer them to Velocity or Flybuys, which means flights if you’re travel-minded, or everyday value if groceries and fuel are more your thing. You can also convert them into around $400 worth of gift cards. For a first card, that’s a clean, easy win that more than offsets the annual fee without requiring complex redemptions.
This card is particularly well-suited to first-time cardholders or anyone who’s been sitting on the sidelines because premium cards feel like overkill. The earn rate is simple (1 point per $1 on eligible spend, capped at $10,000 per statement period), and while seasoned points earners may find that limiting, it’s more than adequate for everyday spending without the pressure of chasing spend targets or optimising categories.²
The 0% balance transfer offer for 12 months (with a 3% balance transfer fee) is another practical bonus.⁸ It’s not the reason to get the card, but it’s genuinely useful if you’re consolidating existing debt or resetting your finances while still earning points on new spend.
Where this card quietly stands out is in the lifestyle perks. Luxury Escapes is a well-regarded platform, and up to 15% off on selected hotels (up to $250) can easily fund a weekend away or a small indulgence you might not otherwise justify.³ The 10% discounts on selected Expedia and Wotif hotels fall into the same category – not game-changing, but very usable, especially for domestic trips or short stays.⁹ Add in purchase protection and extended warranty insurance, and you’ve got a set of benefits that feel practical rather than padded.⁴
That said, this isn’t the card for airport lounge access, premium travel insurance, or maximising points on high spending. But if you want a straightforward, flexible rewards card that’s easy to understand, easy to use, and delivers real value without complexity – especially as your first credit card – the MyCard Rewards Card is a sensible, low-stress place to start.
