How to use Qantas Points Calculators

With the myriad of different earn and redemption rates based on which airline you’re flying, what class you’re traveling in, which fare bucket you’re booked into, and the distance you are traveling, it can be a maze to exactly work out how many points you are going to earn from your paid flight or how many points you need to get to that dream destination or to upgrade and travel in style.

This guide takes a look at the various calculators that Qantas have provided in order to make this task a bit easier.

Earning Points & Status Credits Calculator

This calculator shows you how many Qantas points and status credits you can earn when flying Qantas, Jetstar, oneworld and partner airlines. In order to accurately use the calculator, you simply need to insert your departure and arrival cities, the date of travel, the class of ticket that you purchased along with your frequent flyer status.

For example, say I wanted to see how many Qantas points and status credits I would earn on a flight from Brisbane to Singapore. We will look at four different scenarios here to highlight the different scenarios that the calculator can handle.

Scenario 1: Flying on a Qantas marketed flight in an Economy fare as a Qantas Bronze member

Flying on a standard Economy fare from Brisbane to Singapore will see you earning 3,900 Qantas points and 40 status credits, with the ability to see what you can earn on the next higher fare up, which in this case is Flexible Economy.

Scenario 2: Flying on a Qantas marketed flight in an Economy fare as a Qantas Gold member

Flying the same flight as a Qantas Gold member will see you earning 6,825 Qantas points and 40 status credits, again showing you the earning ability on the next higher fare class.

Scenario 3: Flying on a British Airways marketed flight in an Economy fare as a Qantas Bronze member

British Airways marketed flights only offer 2 fare classes in Economy, Discount and Flexible, and as such, we have used the former for this example. This shows that if you book a ticket under a BA code rather than a QF one, even if you end up flying on a Qantas plane through a British Airways codeshare with Qantas, the number of Qantas points and status credits earned is dramatically reduced, earning only 1,000 Qantas points and 15 status credits.

Scenario 4: Flying on an Emirates marketed flight in an Economy fare as a Qantas Bronze member

Flying on an Emirates marketed flight, even if flying on a Qantas plane, will see your Qantas points earn halved, along with no status credit earn at all.

Using Points for Classic Flight Rewards Calculator

Qantas also provides a calculator showing the number of Qantas points required to redeem for a flight.

Again, using Brisbane to Singapore as the example, the following two screenshots shows how this calculator displays the number of Qantas points required for an Economy fare and a Business fare respectively.

The layout is clean and easy to understand and shows that an award redemption on a Qantas ticket will set you back 25,200 Qantas points one-way in Economy and 60,000 Qantas points in Business (will increase to 68,400 Qantas Points from 18 September onwards).

Note the airline icon key that is found just below above the award tables indicates the category your award airline fits in.

The exact airline code is listed on the far right hand column, as shown in the example below for a Brisbane to London Gatwick Economy award redemption.

Note that this calculator only details the points required for Qantas and Partner Classic Awards, and not Qantas and Jetstar Any Seat Awards.

Also, taxes, fees and charges are shown during the booking process and not on the calculator.

Using Points for Upgrades Calculator

For those looking to upgrade their flight experience to a higher cabin, you can determine the number of Qantas points needed by using the Classic Upgrade Reward calculator.

If you are looking to upgrade your Brisbane to Singapore leg from Economy to Premium Economy, this will set you back 31,500 Qantas points.

Upgrading the same flight from Economy to Business will set you back 50,000 Qantas points.

Note that the amount of Qantas Points required to upgrade is set to increase from 18 September 2019 onwards.

Summary

These calculators are useful tools to quickly determine your earn and burn rates for Qantas flights and award redemptions respectively. A useful addition to the Classic Flight Rewards calculator would be to show the taxes, fees and charges that would apply for each redemption, but otherwise, these calculators are easy to use and interpret.
